Kittens and puppies love the taste of milk, but after they have been through the weaning process sometimes they become lactose intolerant. If your pet is intolerant to lactose and consumes too much milk, it will give them diarrhea and an upset stomach. Milk may be a good source of calcium, but too much milk may cause bone development problems in puppies and kittens. Food specially formulated for your pets contain the right amount of calcium, so you should use those instead.

Dealing with newborn puppies or kittens may bring some stress on yourself, although they have an active sponsor in those fist weeks of life, their mother. When the mother is present and willing to feed her young ones, you don't have to worry about their feed and their is no need for extra food or supplements. Truth is that the mother can supply all the necessary nutrients to it's newborn through its milk.

The mothers nutrients which passes on through her milk are enough in a first stage of life, giving the kitten or puppy all the needs for a healthy growth. If the mother is not capable of generating enough milk to keep her newborn satisfied, well you'll need to add some supplements, namely an adequate milk supplement.

Kittens

Puppies and kittens have each their own special care. Kittens during the first few days should feed on it's mother milk, or in the absence, as I mentioned before, a special milk supplement for newborn kittens.

Twenty to thirty days after its birth the kitten is ready for solid feed. You can find special nutritious feed for young kittens, they will not eat much, as they'll continue to feed on its mothers milk as well.

Kittens will have gradually less access to the mothers milk as time goes by, and on the other hand will continuously increase feeding with supplements. Two months after he is born the mother should have ended the nursing stage, and the kitten will need to be fed at least 3 times a day.

Your kitten will soon be on it's way to become a full grown cat, by the time he's 10 or 12 months old he'll will stop his growing stage, as he's assumed his adult weight. Make sure his food have a certain variety of flavours, and make sure their is enough moisture in the food mix, too much dry food is not healthy.

Puppies

Puppies like kittens are better off with nutritious milk provided by their mothers, although just like kittens, by the third week is ideal to introduce solid food to their diet. When I mention solid, I mean solid soft food. So, puppies will gradually increase their feeding necessities, by the 8 th week, the mother will have ended its nursing phase and the puppy will depend on normal feeding to survive.

Overfeeding your puppy can be very dangerous to it's health, puppies with excess calcium and too many calories may eventually have bone deficiencies. So, a slow growth pattern is healthier, especially on larger dog breeds.

Until the puppy is 4 months old you should feed him several times a day, about 3 to 4 times. After that reduce the feeding to twice a day and make sure you give him some variety. Homemade food is best for your puppy, if you use dry feed, include some other variety of moist feed to his diet (and don't forget to include vegetables).
